Opened in 2004 and centrally situated in Dumfries and Galloway’s Artists’ Town, The Whitehouse Gallery has gained a solid reputation as a premier art gallery in South West Scotland. Featuring both local and internationally based artists in mixed exhibitions throughout the year, The Whitehouse gallery has much to offer anyone looking to buy contemporary art and craft.

Besides paintings, The Whitehouse Gallery also exhibits sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, glass, bronze, baskets, wood, furniture, card, prints and more.

Kirkcudbright the Artists’ Town

The ancient Royal Burgh of Kirkcudbright in South West Scotland was once an artists colony, home to distinguished artists, including E.A Hornel, Jessie M King, E.A Taylor and Charles Oppenheimer. Many artists, including the Scottish Colourists and Glasgow Boys also frequented Kirkcudbright during the summer months, where they took advantage of the famous ‘galloway light’.

THE CHRISTMAS EXHBITION

THE WHITEHOUSE GALLERY PRESENTS ‘THE CHRISTMAS EXHBITION’
Sat 28th November 2009 – Weds 6th January 2010

The Whitehouse Gallery welcomes the Christmas season with an exhibition featuring works no larger than 15”x 15”, by 15 Fine Artists. ‘The Christmas Exhibition’ will run from Saturday 28th November 2009, through to Wednesday 6th January 2010.

There will be a variety of mediums and styles on show, from a carefully selected assortment of Fine Artists.

The Whitehouse Gallery is very excited to be showing work by Fiona Millar. Her paintings usually depicts rolling landscapes which are influenced by the Galloway countryside, while her still life pieces often feature the style and content of works of the 1930’s. Fiona’s art deco style floral and still life paintings are extremely sought after.

Whitehouse Gallery regulars such as Duncan Macleod RSW will exhibit a new collection of his atmospheric, mixed media landscapes, which were by far the most popular pieces in this year’s Summer Exhibition, outselling all the other artists. Likewise, local artist Valerie Sadler’s work is very much admired; Valerie will have small animal and landscape paintings on show.

Still life’s and landscape’s will be presented by Andy Cross & Suzanne Stuart–Davies; Sandra Ewing & Ed Slater concentrate more on landscapes as their subject matter, but approaching their theme using very different mediums.

Flowers are the subject fondly chosen by Jenny Matthews & Sandra Moffat, the latter also preferring to capture seascapes in her body of work.

Animals are quirkily depicted by Ailsa Black in a whimsical, light-hearted manner, creating paintings loved by both children and adults alike. Animals are also the focus of Rory McLauchlan’s work in this exhibition, but taking a more abstract approach to his subject matter. More abstract works will be on show by Chris Mackenzie & Robert Ryan.

Last but by no means least, there is a selection of etchings & watercolours by one of Dumfries and Galloway’s best-loved artists, Archie Sutter Watt RSW.

There will also be a wide range of exciting new Applied Arts & Crafts on show.

All are welcome to attend the preview opening on Saturday 28th November, from 11am. There will be a glass of bubbly and locally handmade, award winning chocolates on offer to anyone who would like to come and enjoy the exhibition.
